BT Broadband ReviewFor a long time now BT Broadband has been the primary provider of broadband throughout the UK. It still has more subscribers than any other broadband provider. BT broadband's main competitor is NTL. Up until recently, even if you bought broadband from another broadband provider, you were actually still buying a BT broadband. This is because BT controlled telephone exchanges throughout the uk, including all the equipment needed to provide broadband connections, housed within them. BT actually sold broadband packages to other broadband provider companies on a wholesale basis, and they then re-sold them to consumers. This is no longer the case as BT now open up their exchanges and allow other broadband provider companies to install their own equipment into telephone exchanges. This process is known as "local loop unbundling." Broadband providers can therefore now offer broadband to consumers directly, without first having to go through BT. As local loop unbundling process involves installing new equipment, reliability is unfortunately not always what it should be with other broadband providers. Other companies quite often quote high speed broadband rates that they claim are made possible as a result of the new equipment that they have installed. Unfortunately this is not always the case due to the user's distance from the telephone exchange. For instance, many broadband providers are now quoting 8Mbps (8meg) broadband, when in actual fact, the majority of consumers will never achieve more than 2Mbps (2Meg) because they live too far from the telephone exchange. In simple terms the broadband signal loses strength the longer the distance it has to travel. BT Broadband is still the number one broadband provider in the UK. The equipment in use has been tried and tested over the greatest length of time out of any current broadband provider. BT have received several awards for their broadband service from consumer organizations.
